Something’s still burning

Our shtetls were burning, I’m told
A long time ago
They’ve burnt by now

Now we have guns
And bombs and planes
Now we can burn a ghetto
Set fire to a hundred tin-shack shtetls

But something’s still burning

Something born in the shtetls
And raised in the ghettos
It couldn’t be killed
By starvation or gas

But it’s burning now

Whatever was left
Of Rabbi Heschel
And Joe Slovo
Is only embers

And soon even those will go
Like the shtetls
Wherever things go after they burn
